The Barnett Shale, located in North Texas, is one of the most active shale formations in the United States. It stretches across 6,458 square miles and is estimated to hold 43.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That’s enough natural gas to power all of Texas’ homes for almost 200 years.
Most of the Barnett Shale is about a mile and half below some of North Texas' most populated cities, including the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Technological advances such as horizontal drilling paired with hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, have allowed energy companies to extract the natural gas resources with very little impact to the surrounding shale gas area.
Supporting Texas Communities
The production of natural gas from the Barnett Shale contributed more than $133 billion in economic activity to the state of Texas in 2008 alone and has helped create more than 99,000 jobs.
